“Banerjee was the first choice among three names proposed by the three-member VC search committee set up by the state in June. It was chaired by Dipak Mandal, the chancellor’s nominee and VC of Sidho Kanho Birsha University. Two others selected by the search committee were chairman of the College Service Commission Dipak Kar and registrar of Coochbehar Panchanan Barma University Dilip Roy.

After the three names were sent to chancellor and Governor Keshari Nath Tripathi, Banerjee was selected. She was made the interim VC as Ashutosh Ghosh was not given an extension after his six-month tenure came to an end in July.

Suranjan Das
When Suranjan Das was transferred to JU as the new VC in July 2015, educationist Sugato Marjit was appointed as the interim VC of CU. He was succeeded by dean of science Ashutosh Ghosh in July last year. He continued for a year after which Banerjee was made the third interim VC in July this year.

The first VC search committee for CU set up in December 2016 had to be dismantled. In the first committee, Ved Prakash, former chairman of UGC, was the chancellor’s nominee, Abhirup Sarkar, professor of Indian Statistical Institute, was the state nominee and Bhattacharya was the nominee of CU senate. The second revamped search committee comprising the new members was set up in July 2017.

According to sources, the second committee had to be formed after the state raised issues over retirement of Ved Prakash from UGC in March. “The state was not happy with the first committee,” said a source. Banerjee is the wife of a senior bureaucrat and daughter of reputable poet Nirendranath Chakravarti.
