I crumpled in pain, but the blows rained down.
`Why are you doing this? I came to collect the admit card. What is my mistake?’ I whimpered.
`You are a part of SFI and that is your only mistake,’ Candy said.
A second year student from Asutosh College, Rituparna Roy, was harassed, beaten up, punched and battered for two hours for daring to be a part of SFI. She had gone to college to collect her Admit Card for the upcoming exams. The staff had directed her to the main building office where the cards were being distributed. She took a short cut to reach the office and on her way, she met Candy (Sayantani Kar) who was standing there with a group of 15-16 boys.
‘They asked me why I was there. As soon as they got to know that I had come to collect my admit card, she caught me by the hair and dragged me to the back gate staircase. I was screaming but no one listened.’
The kicks, slaps and blows came thick and fast when she refused to cooperate. They made her touch their feet and ordered her to give them in writing that she would join the Trinamool Congress students’ wing. From sleazy comments to nasty physical touches, it went on and on, Candy and the boys sat around her on chairs and started bullying her after dragging her by the hair up three flights of stairs to the union room near the canteen.
`Tell us, should we kill you or let you go? I am not scared of the media or police. You think an arrest can stop me?’ she told me.
After the assault a single voice of protest gave rise a an uproar against the perpetrator as a regular offender allegedly known for her arm-twisting tactics.
This is just one out of a hundred incidents that take place on a daily basis unleashing the fatal impact that political interference has on education. Somethings just don’t go together, education and politics being one of them. Education as an institution bears the great responsibility of cultivating young minds, providing them with the advantage of putting their intelligence to some good use that can help the world change for the better.Political meddling in the education system can decay its roots resulting in the fall of the whole institution as a whole. Not only is this faulty, but also is incredibly dangerous for those who don’t want to get involved in the mess.
Any educational institution promises impeccable learning environment for its students enabling them with all the possible advantages to build a great future. However, little do we know that the benefits offered by the same reputed institutions come hand in hand with the sly chaos and unnecessary drama offered by political involvement.
You can’t expect the education sector to make any progress under the negative impact of mindless politics. This pair will keep making more damage and will never do any good. It is time we break this misfit.
