One of the topmost IITs of the country, the Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee, began with its campus placements for the year 2017 earlier this week. The first week of the placement drive has seen a tremendous outcome with the authorities reporting that over 50% of the students have received offers already. The placement rate is up to 30 percent up from the corresponding period last year.
“Last year, hiring at the IITs had slowed down,” said Debasis Deb, chairman, career development centre, IIT Kharagpur. “But according to early trends, this time around we are headed back to at least 75 percent placement numbers,” he said. Last year, the placements had dropped to 66 percent.
While IIT Kharagpur reached a booming 900 mark in the placements, IIT Madras, Roorkee, and BHU also crossed 50%of their population. IIT Kanpur also saw Intel selecting a full class of 59 candidates. These rapid placements hint at the increasingly significant growth of technology and the IT sector. As the world moves towards faster and better technology, the industry demands skills and expertise of the young minds.
A total of 168 companies participated in the first week of placement at the IIT, Roorkee. These companies offered 681 offers in total — 286 in core sector and 395 in the non-core sector. International giants such as Microsoft, Uber, Goldman Sachs, Samsung, Rubrik, Hitachi Seisakusho became a part of the first-week placements. “This has been a great start to the placement season. Over 50 percent students have already got offers within the first week and we expect the same pace in the coming week as well,” N P Padhy, Placement in charge, IIT Roorkee said in the statement.
The first phase of placement will continue till mid- December. It will resume in January and continue till March-April after a short break.
